I’ve noticed some basic Oud questions online and decided to post the answers to them here!
What is Oud oil?
Oud is a highly valued aromatic oil derived from the resinous heartwood of agarwood trees. It has a distinctive and rich fragrance, which is often described as complex woody, sweet. The aroma of Oud oil can’t be replicated by made as there are over 200 compounds that create the smell. Every Oud is different depending on the region, distillation process and age. Oud oil is commonly used in perfumery, aromatherapy, and traditional medicine due to its complex scent profile and purported therapeutic properties.
Now, on to the questions!
Is Oud oil based?
Yes, for the most part and traditionally Oud is distilled as an essential oil but these days there are some co2 extraction Oud products available.
How long does Oud oil last on the skin?
This depends on the oil and processing used to make it. Generally you should expect an Oud oil to last at least 6-8 hours on the skin but stronger oils can last days, even after a shower.
Does Oud oil go bad over time?
No. It will usually enhance in aroma over time, deepening, rounding off with more subtle nuances appearing over the years.
Why is Oud oil so expensive?
It’s a very labour intensive process. Wild Oud oil comes from Aquila trees deep in Asian jungles. Generally only one in ten or less will be infected and laden with Agarwood. The Agarwood needs to be collected from the tree and cleaned of normal wood. The Agarwood is then distilled over a few days to collect the oil.
How to wear Oud oil?
Simply apply a small dot or swipe to the back of your hand and rub wherever you wish. Many people like to apply behind the ears or on the wrists. I like to apply to back of hand and around the neck area.
Does Oud oil stain clothes?
Technically yes but Oud oil is used in such small amounts that any oil is absorbed when applied on the skin with very little chance of noticeable drainage on your clothes.
