Agarwood Producing Regions Index

Below is an index list of wild / cultivated Oud / Agarwood regions and growing areas with a brief description. It’s a work in progress. Did I miss any? Let me know, please use the contact form with your suggestions!

 

* Southeast Asia:

Bhutan:

* Indonesia: Indonesia itself is huge with over 18,000 islands with Borneo being the largest. This region has a range of profiles from these differing areas.

* Borneo: This huge island is home to many Oud regions. The tone is generally a medium to low sweetness with more of a serious jungle scent.


* East Kalimantan
* Central Kalimantan
* South Kalimantan
* Sabah
* Sarawak
* Brunei
* Pontianak
* Tarakan Island


* Other Indonesian areas:
* Buton Island
* Bangka island
* Sumatra:
* Malino (South Sulawesi)
* Java

* Papua: low grade up to very high quality material. Jayapura is very popular. Papua can have a very earthy profile

* Malaysia: A highly sought after region, especially for the oil aroma profile which is medium sweet and complex. Perfect for beginners and craved by aficionados!

*Philippines: The Oud wood of this region can be exquisite and vary in profile from bright and airy to more complex and serious jungle notes.

* Mindanao Island

* Vietnam:
* famous for its rare and expensive but still available wild wood. Vietnam is home to a huge Agarwood farming industry.

* Khanh Hoa
* Phu Yen
* Binh Dinh
* Quang Nam
* Hue
* Quang Binh
* Phu Quoc
* Nha Trang

* Laos: Wild stock rarely seen on the market and trees are classed as ‘semi extinct’ in this region.

* Pakkading
* Savannakhet

* Cambodia: Renowned for friendly and sweet candy style Oud oil profiles.
*Koh Kong
* Pursat

* Thailand: a fair amount of wild stock available on the market and a thriving cultivation scene. The Thai region of (Trat) is probably the most well renowned Oud oil for beginners. Can have a sweet and or fruity aroma.

* Rayong

* South Thailand

* Myanmar / Burma:
Wild stock found on the market infrequently. Not seen so often but not particularly rare.

*Kachin State (north Myanmar)


* South Asia:

* India: A light, bright, fruity and beautiful signature scented wood and oil that is very welcoming for beginners.


* Assam
* Nagaland
* Garo Hills
* Haflong
* Manipur
* Mizoram
* Meghalaya
* Tripura
* Tri Anglong
*Aranachal predesh region

* West Bengal

* Bangladesh: generally cultivated / managed older trees. Cultivated using nails.


*Sylhet

* Sri Lanka / Ceylon: AKA silani Oud, generally (not always) quite airy and oceanic blue scent. A very unique aroma that’s is highly sought after.

* Adam’s peak (most sought after area in Sri Lanka)
* Sri Pada

* East Asia:

* China:


* Yunnan: quite rare and expensive wild oud.
* Guangdong: (New plantations)

* Hainan Island: Wild wood and vast plantations currently creating cultivated kinam.

* Hong Kong (literally ‘fragrant harbour’) has had its wild trees pretty much depleted on Lantau Island with only a few trees remaining. However in the last few years new plantations have been established.

* Pacific Region

* Papua New Guinea 
New lowland forests discovered 2005. Generally quite rare and expensive. Slightly earthy/ savoury style
